They can all be replaced or repaired, so a lot of the choice comes down to longevity and protection. Many business owners go with a Flat Roof System. This brings several additional choices, from alternate materials to modern installation.

Flat roofing is also preferred by commercial structures for the cost benefits. On that note, homeowners like asphalt shingles for the same reason. They’re inexpensive and hold up well to the elements. They don’t last as long as other materials, but they’re still cheaper to replace.

Slate has a lifespan stretching past 100 years with proper maintenance. It brings one of the best protections for your home among roofing materials, but it’s also one of the most expensive. Still, it’s worth considering for the lifespan.

Tile is similar to slate in that sense. It’s long-lasting, but the cost is balanced. A lot of homeowners enjoy tile on their roof, but you’ll have to decide if the investment is worth it. Tile offers a lot of aesthetic options, though, which is a big plus for many customers.

The materials you want for your roof can also depend on which service you need done. For example, it might be more cost-efficient to mass repair your roof if you have tile or slate up there. 

That’s because the material cost is so high, so we’ll suggest repairs unless your roof has been there at least 70 years or the damages are too bad. Wood, on the other hand, isn’t really worth repairing if the damages are extensive. In fact, we might even suggest an alternate material.

You might be wondering why we’d suggest changing out the wood. Despite the unique aesthetic of natural wood on your roof, it’s just not worth it in most cases. The upkeep costs and the reduced lifespan can end up costing you more than you’ll probably want to pay.

On top of that, some areas don’t allow wood roofing due to the fire hazard that it poses. As usual, we recommend a professional roofer because we know the local safety codes. This brings us to asphalt shingles, which are the most common choice among homeowners.

Shingles are less expensive, so they’re cheaper to replace. Because of that, we can replace your shingles multiple times before you end up near the cost of a different material being installed in the first place. However, they don’t have the longevity of some other materials.

As shingles get old or damaged, they can crack, peel, or fall off. Heavy winds can also blow them off, or tall tree branches can wreak havoc. Asphalt shingles are hard to decide between the cost of a repair or a replacement, so we’ll put our experience to work.
